THE CHARM OF OLD HARBOURS

OSTEND, BELGIUM

The salty air, the fishermen preparing for their rough adventures, and the screaming seagulls… you could breath the authenticity of the Nord Sea.

Sporty hat on my head, all covered in earthy tones, I was strolling around the Belgian city of Ostend while exploring its beautiful coastline, when I came upon this incredible old harbour and experienced an irresistible urge to snap some quick shots. There was something special about this abandoned dockyard, sinking away into the cold dark water.

The salty air, the fishermen preparing for their rough adventures, and the screaming seagulls… you could breath the authenticity of the North Sea.

Was I afraid while shooting on this sinking dock? Most certainly. If it wasn’t enough with the cracking wood under my feet and the clear signs of deterioration throughout the whole place, we had a moment of hesitation when a police car drove by –luckily, they didn’t see us or it was in fact permitted to be there-.

Nevertheless, it was all worth it. How a location could match my outfit so well without planning it, I still don’t know. But lesson learned: Always go with your guts and trust your instincts; spontaneous shoots can often turn out to be better than expected.
